Strawberries are at Season’s Peak! Stock up now!

Publix shares some great information about Strawberries:

Growing Facts:
The Central West Coast of Florida provides ideal growing conditions for winter strawberries: sub-tropical temperatures, unique soils, and an abundance of experienced growers. In fact, many of our vendors have been growing strawberries for several generations, dating as far back as the 1920’s.

Nutritional Facts:
Strawberries are a good source of vitamin C, with just one serving of eight medium-sized berries delivering 140% of the recommended daily amount. Also, strawberries are high in folate.

Selection & Storage:
It’s peak season for fresh Florida strawberries, so you know you’re getting delectable fruit. But here are a couple tips for picking up the ripest berries of the bunch:

  • Look for bright red berries with their caps intact.
  • Take a whiff. Fresh berries should be quite fragrant.
  • Don’t pass on small strawberries. They’re usually sweeter and more flavorful.

Eat your selections as soon as possible, washing them only when you are ready to munch. If you must store your strawberries, place them on a paper towel in a tightly covered container in the refrigerator. They should be good for another 2-3 days.

Strawberries can also be frozen, whole or in pieces. Simply wash, dry, and remove the caps of your strawberries, then place them on a cookie sheet in the freezer. Once frozen, transfer your berries to a zip-top bag and remove as much air as possible. Store in the freezer for up to six months.

This week Publix has a 16 oz pkg of Strawberries on sale for only 3/$5 ($1.67 each)!

Once you get your strawberries if you rinse them in a 1 part vinegar to 10 parts water ratio the berries last MUCH longer!  We’re going on a week with no rotting ones :)  It kills the mold spores on the berries.  Enjoy those berries longer!
